In the 1960s and 1970s, Bright Center was home to Leggett’s, a local department store (shown in this rare photo sent to us by Karen Helm). Many people who visit Bright Center now have fond memories of Leggett’s, pointing out with joy where the shoe department used to be, where they bought their Girl Scout clothes, and how they used to ride the escalator. As we renovated this wonderful building , we did our best to preserve reminders of this department store that meant so much to the city. The tin ceilings are still here, as are the old steel handrails, and the first and only escalator in Winchester. Stop by some time for a tour!
